Atomic Structure

(Most of the points are already covered in the previous chapter, the one left are mentioned below)
·        Composition of an atom:

Subatomic Particles
Relative Charge
Relative Masses
Nucleus
Protons (p)
+1
1
Neutrons (n)
0
1
Shells
Electrons (e)
-1
1/1840
·         Charge on an electron is 1.602 x 10-19 Coulombs
·         Nucleon number = number of protons + number of neutrons
·         Neutral atom:
Positively Charged Protons = Negatively Charged Electrons
·         Ion Formation:
When an atom gains or losses electrons, ions are formed which are electrically charged.
·         Beams of protons and electrons are deflected by electric fields but neutrons are not.
Negatively charged electrons are deflected towards the positive plate
Positively charged protons are deflected towards the negative plate
